Q: Does the band play requests? and/or What songs will the band play?

VIEW A SAMPLE SONG LIST.

If we know a request, we will play it.  We have over 1000 songs in rotation.  We can not play every song, but if we get fair warning, we may even add specific song requests to the set as part of the contract.  We're also seasoned event professionals, and do our best to "read the room" and see how guests are reacting to the music.  We try to make sure we play something for everyone in the crowd.  Our set may have music ranging from the 1940's all the way through current hits.  Genres can include Reggae, Soca, Calypso, Jazz, Rock, Punk, Ska, Jam, Folk, Trop-Rock, Acoustic, etc.

Q: How big is the band?

Solo • Duo • Small Combos • Full Bands • Vocalists available.  Everything up through a small combo can fit in a 12 x 12 area.  Larger bands (6 or more) require a wider area.

Q: What are backing tracks?

Backing tracks are custom created rhythm section (harmony/drum/bass) music that sits behind the smaller groups to give the full band sound.  This is a standard practice in Caribbean music, and even larger stage acts often use elements of pre-recorded music to fill in the show and make it sound more like the full recordings.  Backing tracks are often expected, but are optional depending on the selected performance group.

Q: What type of events do we play?

A: Casual parties, Formal events, Weddings, Backyard Barbecues, Trade Shows, Music Festivals, Restaurants, Hotels, Celebrations of Life, Awareness Events, Promotional Events, Branding Events, or anything you're celebrating.

Q: What is in the contract?

Our contract sets the expectations for the client and the artist.  The basic contract reviews discussed logistics of the performance such as date, time, type of event, attire, size of band, price, overtime rates, parking, protection from the elements, special music requests, on-site contact, etc.  Most events require some form of food/beverage package, electricity vs. generator arrangements, and location specifications.  Check out a SAMPLE CONTRACT.

Q: How does the band set their rates?

Rates are based on a per event model, up through 3 hours.  Additional over-time is negotiated in the contract.  Booking a short performance still requires us to do everything on either end of the event.  Our rehearsals, drive time/expense, set-up time, equipment upkeep, etc. don't really change.  We generally only have the chance to work one event per day, so the commitment is per event.  Add-ons include any required ferry, flights, overnights, extended drives, or generator.

Q: What are the sound system requirements?

The band is "self-contained" with adaptable sound systems for most events.  Intimate events can be acoustic without sound reinforcement, or with a small battery powered speaker, while larger events, may require 6 or more speakers for multi-direction use, and subwoofers to boost the low end.  We own all our own gear, and can even include a sound engineer.  For large stage venues, festivals, and multi-band shows, we are happy to use house gear.  The steel pans have pickups that run through Radial Stagebug D.I. boxes with an XLR output.  Stage plots depending on the contracted band.

Q: Why does the band need shade?

Steel pans are delicate instruments that rely on thin steel to create the best tone.  When exposed to direct sunlight, the heat warps the physical properties of the metal, detuning and damaging the instruments.  Our specialized steel pan tuner/builder lives 5 states away, and travels this direction twice a year.

Q: Will the band bring a generator?

While the band owns a battery powered generator, this is a limited power supply that is available for shorter engagements and may not be in direct sunlight.  The generator is available for a $50 rental fee.

Q: Will the band bring lights?

The band owns a modest stage lighting rig that is available for evening performances.  We do not feature a light show or provide lighting for guests.

Q: What if the band is not available?

We are team players, and have a great working relationship with other steel pannists in our area!  We will do our best to contract them for you at no extra charge!  You deserve to have a fantastic event even if we can't be there.
